How to wear and care for your birdcage veil

Vintage bridal dresses and accessories are becoming increasing popular and what every retro bride needs is a birdcage veil. A versatile accessory that covers part of your face at an angle or position that creates a look that is uniquely all your own.

The birdcage veil was made popular in the 1940's and is now making a comeback after Hollywood's trendsetters rediscovered their beauty and charm. They are a very elegant and sophisticated accessory made from a variety of Russian or Merry Widow veiling with their distinctive diamond patterns or a delicate soft tulle.

We currently use three varieties of veiling:

  • 9" or 12" Russian Birdcage Veiling ~ The 9" is quite a soft veiling and the 12" is a little stiffer with larger diamond shaped holes
  • 9" or 12" Merry Widow Birdcage Veiling ~ A beautiful design of veiling featuring chenille spots. The 9" is quite a soft veiling and the 12" is a little stiffer with larger diamond shaped holes.
  • Tulle: A very soft tulle with tightly woven holes

and design three styles of veil:

  • The Angle: A  9" veil and as the name suggest this veil will sit at an angle and positioned so it covers part of your face.
  • The Birdcage Blusher: A design that covers the whole face and made from 12" veiling
  • The Bandeau or Visor: A simple 9" design that lies across the face to cover the eyes.

You can secure your veil in whatever position you like.......that's the beauty of these cute little veils. They are so versatile.

As their position all comes down to personal choice you have so many options available......Wear at the back of your hair, on the top, at the side, straight, at an angle, flat or poufy......Experiment and Have Fun!!!!!!

The veils come with combs to help you secure them into your hairstyle and you will also need some bobby pins to position the veil exactly as you want it. If it sticks up too much just slip in a few grips to flatten it down.

Caring for your veil

The veiling and tulle used to make the veils is delicate and can tear if not handled correctly. By following a few simple rules your veil will last for years.

  • Be mindful of the comb when handling your veil. The teeth can damage the fabric if they get caught.

  • The veiling may become creased after storage. Do not iron your veil. Instead try steaming it back into shape by hanging it near a hot shower (not in it). The creases should just fall away.

  • Veils without any decoration can be hand washed gently in warm water with mild laundry detergent. Reposition whilst damp and allow to dry naturally.

  • Veils with decoration can be sponge cleaned to remove any marks.

  • Do not wring or squeeze your veil dry. Dab with a cloth to soak up any excess water.

  • Where possible try and store your veil on a polystyrene head to keep it's natural shape.
